What is Pragmatics?

Pragmatic is an adjective that refers to people who are practical and sensible. People who are pragmatic concentrate on what is working in the real-world and don't get bogged by ideas that are not realistic.

Origins

The term pragmatic was first coined in the United States around 1870. It was embraced by American philosophers and the general public because of its close connection with modern natural and social sciences. At the time, it was considered as a philosophical counterpart to the scientific worldview. It was widely viewed as being capable of bringing similar advances in research into issues such as morality, and the meaning of life.

William James (1842 to 1910) is believed to be the first to using the term pragmatic in print. He is believed to be both the father of modern psychology and a pioneer pragmatist. He identified a fundamental dichotomy in human philosophy, which is reflected in the title of his 1907 book titled "The Present Dilemma in Philosophy'. This neopragmatism is concerned with fixing what it considers to be mainstream epistemology's critical mistake of not conceiving the world of thought and language as mirroring the world (Rorty 1982). These philosophers have attempted to restore the ideal of objectivity within classical pragmatism.
